This new, 152-unit affordable housing project sits at the edge of the Mission Bay neighborhood. The building massing’s four wings create small, identifiable communities within the building and block: the China Basin Wing, the Mews Wing, the Mission Bay Boulevard Wing, and the Merrimac Wing. The collection of these smaller building wings creates an intimate neighborhood at 6W within the larger Mission Bay neighborhood. Breaks in massing between these wings, as well as courtyard entries on three facades, provide views out and a visual connection to the block. These visual and physical connections, combined with integrative and supportive programming, help to create a healthy and dynamic environment that encourages relationships and builds community between residents and the neighborhood.

The ground floor courtyard is the heart of the 6W community. The courtyard provides a range of gathering spaces and includes seating, a community barbecue, and lush landscaping, which will enhance gatherings both small and large. Although the courtyard will serve the resident of 6W on a day-to-day basis, we also structured it so that it can serve the larger neighborhood community when combined with adjacent community room uses or when hosting public celebrations.
