After months of intensive consultation with members of the community and the Recreation and Parks Department, we arrived at a design for the North Beach Pool and Community Center that met the many needs of its users and also became a landmark for the neighborhood. The project includes a building addition that provides improved locker rooms, a new community center for preschool and after-school programs, and refitting of the existing natatorium with two separate pools to accommodate different user groups and activities. At the Lombard Street entrance, the building opens up to allow views directly through to the pools and to create a sense of welcoming and connection to the interior. The new butterfly roof over the addition opens to the playground, gives the building a greater presence on Lombard Street, and relates the addition to the existing pool structure.
